GrubHub Driver's requirements for 2019

In the world of today, more and more people are looking for a “side-hustle” on their days off. It is easy to make money with a side job if you pick the right one and understand the terms.

But with the increasing amount of “gig-services” which one is best suited to you?

Whether you’re a student looking to make some extra cash or need some additional support and want to work in your free time, Grubhub is the service for you.

What is Grubhub?

Grubhub was founded in 2004 and is an American online and mobile food ordering and delivery service that connects users with local takeout restaurants. It is based in Chicago, and as of 2019, the company has 19.9 million active users and 115,000 associated restaurants across 2,200 cities.

According to its website, Grubhub is America’s leading online and mobile food ordering and delivery service. It connects hungry customers with the restaurant they want and delivers the food right to their doorstep. As a potential driver for GrubHub, the platform could offer you a higher earnings potential compared to other more lowkey services.

GrubHub allows its drivers to have flexible employment where you can schedule your own shifts, work however much you desire, and be your own boss.

Driving for GrubHub is quite straightforward. First, you must log on to the GrubHub driver app to start accepting orders, drive to restaurants to pick up the orders submitted by the customer, and then deliver it to the customer’s location.

To go more into the details, first, you log on to the GrubHub driver app to either start driving immediately or schedule your shift for a later time. If you decide to drive directly, you will select the zone you wish to deliver to. This will limit your driving radius and will help increase the number of orders you can receive, so you won’t have to drive very far for an order.

When you receive an order, you’ll drive to the partner restaurant to pick up the customer’s request. Since the customer has already paid for that order through the app, you just need to pick up the food.

Once you pick it up, you will then deliver the order to the drop-off location and hand the food over to the customer. And after you complete this order, you will receive another one and so on. For each order you complete, you’ll be paid a fare. The better you treat the customer, the better chance you have at receiving a big tip.

Vehicle Requirements

Once you decide to drive for Grubhub, there aren’t many specifics that will apply to your vehicle. Of course, your car must be able to drive from one place to another without significant delays or malfunctioning. You must also have valid car insurance.

If your vehicle of choice is a bicycle, you will be required to have your unique three-digit code stuck to the rear. As you can see, Grubhub isn’t too picky with their vehicles and most of the other requirements mainly concern the driver.

When you choose to deliver in New York using a bike, there are other requirements you should also follow. The New York law requires you to be wearing a reflective vest, helmet, headlight, bell, and carrying a laminated card with your three-digit ID number to take with you, and a plate bearing your three-digit ID number on the rear of your bicycle when performing deliveries. In order to keep the deliveries fresh, you are also required to have an insulated delivery bag; you can use your own or get a Grubhub bag upon request. We would also recommend an insulated biker delivery backpack, which you can purchase from an external source or Grubhub itself.

Some other gear that is not required but might come in handy is a bike rack and lock, a portable phone charger, and a phone mount to make using the app and the GPS more convenient.

Before starting deliveries, all bikers in NYC are required to complete an NYC Department of Transportation Safety Course. You can find more information on this course here.

Driver Requirements

You must apply on their website as a driver. Firstly, you enter your name, last name, email, and then what city and what specific area you would like to work in.

Afterward, you choose whether you want to drive a car, a scooter, a bike, or a motorcycle. But not all of these options are available for all areas; it will later inform you once you enter your zip code into the system.

Also, not all areas are hiring, and that will be told in the next phase of signing up. If they are currently not hiring, you will be put on a waiting list and contacted if they have open positions again.

Then you are asked what age you are, as you must be at least 19 years old to work for Grubhub (21+ in Chicago).

Another requirement is that you must own an iPhone mobile device with iOS 10 or higher, or alternatively an Android with 5.0 or higher. You must also include a data plan with your phone, as you will be accepting orders and using the GPS outside without Wi-Fi readily available. Make sure to get a mobile plan with lots of data if you are going to be making deliveries every day.

To receive your payments, you must have a checking account that is able to accept direct deposit. If you are not the owner of a checking account yet and can’t decide which one to get, check out this post. When signing up, you authorize a background check, and you must pass to become an official driver.

Grubhub uses the popular background checking platform Checkr.com. Checkr uses AI (artificial intelligence) and machine learning to classify customer data better.

It generates faster, more accurate, more compliant results, as there is no human aspect in these checks. Their background checking takes only a short amount of time, so you will not have to wait long for the results, and the whole process is relatively transparent as you can check for status updates on your check.

A valid driver’s license is also required by Grubhub if you are going to be operating a car or a motorcycle. This license must have been issued at least two years ago as Grubhub is looking for drivers with some experience. You must also have valid car insurance. If you do not yet have car insurance because you consider it too pricey, you can read tips on reducing your car insurance costs here. If you plan on working with Grubhub using a bicycle, you must have a valid state-issued ID.

Application Process

After you input all your documents and finish your application, you must wait for a response. But, you still have the option of checking the status of your application from the application portal. For access to this portal, you should check for an email or a text from Grubhub. Both of these will include a link to your personalized application portal.

Once your application is approved, you will receive an invite to a process called onboarding. Here you will be shown how to schedule blocks, get paid, and log into and use the Grubhub for Drivers app. You will also be offered tips and tricks from experienced Grubhub drivers. Onboarding is recommended but not required, so if you would not like to participate, you can reply to the email declining the invite.

Next, you will start getting information about your delivery equipment pickup, depending on where you live and if there is a Grubhub office in your area. If there is a local office, you will sign up for a time that is convenient for you to get the delivery equipment. The instructions and available times will be sent to you beforehand also.

If you do not live near a local office, you should receive your delivery bags 3-5 business days after your onboarding or application approval if you are not onboarding. Once it is sent, you will get an email with the tracking number so you will always be informed about when it will be arriving.

Working at Grubhub

Grubhub has many drivers, and there are many reviews about driving for this service online. Drivers praise the hours, and how you can work whenever you want, it’s all up to you. You can really be your own boss, which isn’t something you easily find elsewhere.

One driver said that this is the perfect job to earn money on the side while doing school or another job and that they typically made around $100 for every 7 hours they worked, and it only took up around $10-15 worth of gas. Sometimes you can make as much as $400 a week while working 40 hours.

One of the drawbacks is that because you do everything yourself, you also must do your own taxes. But this is easy to learn as there are many resources online, and Grubhub also offers up to 50% off on Quickbooks, which is the primary tool you will use.

But, you don’t have to report cash tips on your taxes, and you can report miles, gas, car maintenance and repairs, and meals you eat on the job on your taxes as deductions. Another user says that Grubhub is a very fast-paced environment with many users, and you must be quick and stay on schedule to maximize your benefit from the service.

One driver complains of the terms of the order getting canceled. The driver receives no compensation for the gas or time spent on getting to the order location.

According to another user, Grubhub will not pay you their hourly pay if you miss even one order request or reject any order. This user has tried to contact them via phone and email, and the only response they have gotten is that “Grubhub is a new company and everything isn’t perfect.”

Lousy customer service is standard when a company has so many drivers and users, although that is one thing that should be improved and you should look out for.

There are also not many growth opportunities with this job, but as it is mainly to accompany a main higher-paying job, this shouldn’t be a big problem. Sometimes the tips are low, or there are none at all, but this is not a Grubhub problem and is very individual to the customers.

A more detailed post on the drawbacks includes complaints such as significant amount wear and tear on your car and cost of gas. As we mentioned already, you can include the gas as a tax deduction. It also consists of the fact that you can get multiple orders at the same time, and sometimes houses and apartments are hard to find and will delay your delivery and lower your tip.

As with any job, you will have to do things which you will not like or want to do, such as taking low-paying (such as $3) deliveries in order to get the hourly wage, which you know aren’t worth the gas or the time.

Drivers are happy with the fact that if orders are slow and there are no deliveries to be made, you still get paid an hourly wage. Some drivers even consider working here as fun, saying that it is a relaxing and low-stress job, and suitable for those who have retired already, mothers with young kids and college kids.

It is also a cool way to discover your neighborhood, find new restaurants to try and befriend nice restaurant staff. As you can tell, the main selling point is the flexible and individual schedule in which you can work around your daily errands and job.

Our Verdict

Grubhub is not and never will be a full-time job. You will not make nearly enough to support yourself fully with a food delivery service, but it is the perfect side job. When you’re a student and have classes in the mornings or afternoons for a few hours and find yourself having extra time after the homework, this is the job for you. Driving around for some time, listening to music, and earning cash to support your daily spending or textbook purchasing will take your mind off the stress of studying.

It will also make you feel independent and responsible once you start making your own money. If you’re a mother and your kids are at school, and you find yourself wanting to keep busy, Grubhub will be perfect for you. Today it is rare to find a decent paying job where you can set your own schedule and control the hours, and this is one of them. Of course, there are also other food delivery services out there, but most reviewers who have tried most of them say they made more daily with Grubhub than they did with Postmates, Doordash, and so on.

As you can tell, this is a job that works for all types of people, and if you find yourself meeting the requirements, and having some extra time you should apply and see if it matches your lifestyle.
