When selecting a credit card, a women’s clothing store is not the first place you’d look, but you’ll be surprised to find out how competitive this credit card is.
Maurice’s was established in 1930 and has been operating for an impressive 85 years. It has become a highly popular clothing retail chain that includes over 1,000 stores all over the US and Canada. You may have never entered a Maurices store, but you are sure to have heard the name of the company.
The Maurices credit card is affiliated with Capital One Bank, which offers a great line of credit card offers if you feel that this one is not suitable for your needs.
If you are an avid shopper at this store, this credit card has many benefits to offer you which will make your shopping weekends more fulfilling and rewarding.
Rates and Fees
The APR (Annual Percentage Rate) for purchases is 28.74% as of October 2019, although this might vary with the market based on the Prime Rate.
The prime rate is independently determined and published by the Wall Street Journal that is in effect at the end of each month and is applied to all credit cards. Variable rates are updated monthly and only go into effect on the first day of your next billing cycle.
The minimum interest charge is $2.00, so once it is determined that you must pay interest, it will be no less than $2. But, to avoid paying interest, you must pay the full regular purchase credit plan that will be on your billing statement each month and any additional minimum payments on the promotional credit plans at least 25 days after the closing of each billing cycle.
If you pay your previous balance in full by the due date each month, you will not be charged interest on new purchases. If your payment is past due, you will be charged up to $38.
You may also be charged a return payment fee every time your financial institution rejects a payment you make to this card. Your minimum amount is calculated according to your balance.
If your balance is less than $27, your minimum payment will be the same as your balance. If not, your minimum amount will be either $27 or 1% of your “New Balance” whichever is higher. Also added will be interest charges, any late payment fees, and any other fees acquired, which previously were not paid.
There are no annual fees, so this is a completely free account, which is a common feature in most credit cards.
There are promotional credit plans offered from time to time, which will be provided prior to or at the time of the purchases. Only some purchases are eligible for these plans. These plans will consist of special repayment terms and depend on your timely payment of the amount each billing cycle. The Waived Interest Charge Credit Plan will allow you to not be charged any interest on your purchase for a specific period.
With the Same As Cash/ Monthly Payment Credit Plan, there are zero interest charges applied to your purchase if you are able to repay the full cash price of the purchase you made before the expiration date of the promotion, which will be shown on your statement.
If you do not refund this amount before the appointed time, interest charges will be applied to the promotional purchase.
The Reduced Rate Credit Plan will qualify you for a reduced Annual Percentage Rate (APR) on your purchases for a specific period. You have the opportunity to add an authorized user to your card, and they will be able to access your account, which makes this card convenient for families.
In case your card is lost or stolen, you will not be responsible for the transactions made on your account once you report the theft or loss to customer service.
The Maurices VIP credit card also includes many benefits for shoppers who actively visit Maurices stores. You will receive a $5 reward and 100 bonus points for signing up and afterward 1 point for every $1 spent. Exclusive member perks and access to special events that will allow you to earn bonus points are also made available to you upon signing up. On your birthday, you will also get a bonus $10 rewards.
Even on sale items, you will get 10% off your entire purchase every single day. Free shipping is also included in this offer on all purchases made online without any minimum amount. You will be invited to a double points weekend event every month, which is member exclusive. We consider this one of the best perks as it is hard to find another offer on free shipping like this.
The reward program is relatively simple; each Mymaurices Rewards Point is worth 5 cents. Once you earn 100 Mymaurices points, you can redeem that for a $5 shopping certificate at any Maurice store or online. The discount is instantly applied when you use the card for purchases, so there is no wait for a rewards certificate and has no limit.
There is 24/7 customer service available, which also includes an online chat. You can apply for this card right in the store, online, over the phone, or on the Mymaurices app, which is available on the App Store or Google Play.
So far, it has been made clear that this is not a card for those who do not do most of their shopping at Maurices stores. For non-customers, this card will have no value whatsoever; there are no cashback options or points for purchases made in other external places.
There are plenty of credit cards out there that will offer cashback and rewards for all types of purchases that aren’t exclusive to one place. All the perks, discounts, rewards collected with this card can only be received and redeemed at Maurices stores.
To the Maurices shoppers who usually carry balances on their credit cards, we would recommend staying away from getting the VIP card as the 28.74% Variable APR is comparatively high and can quickly negate any discounts or rewards you might earn. Your creditworthiness decides your credit limit, but as it is a store card, it will most likely be very low wach month or even max it out.
A large chunk of your credit score is dependant upon your credit utilization ratio. This refers to the amount of credit you have available versus the amount of credit you actually use.
For example, if you have a $200 limit on a credit card and regularly collect $100 in charges, this would mean you have a high credit utilization score — and that’s bad for your credit.
This applies even if you pay off the balance in full and on-time monthly. The low credit score may be beneficial as it prevents overspending, but the drawback far outweighs this.
The reviews from Maurice’s customers for this card are highly positive, with only a few complaints.
A review from Wallethub says that even though the interest rate is pretty high for this kind of store card, they find that the fantastic deals outweigh this. This customer loves Maurices and shops there at least once a month, and being a Maurice’s cardholder helps them get monthly savings and deals that make the whole experience more worthwhile.
They praise the fact that they receive many coupons in the mail, and paired with the discounts helps them earn even more savings.
This card is always in their system, so if even when they left the card at home, they were still able to use it. The application process was relatively simple, and this customer really recommends all Maurices customers to sign up for this card.
Another review from Financialglobe, which is titled “LOVE IT” praises all the services offered with this card.
This customer applied for this card online, was approved instantly, and got the card within a few days. Maurices is a store often visited by this user, and the online payments sealed the deal.
The customer also says that their scores were in the lower 600’s, and they had been declined for a Kohl’s credit card previously but were glad to be approved for the Maurices card.
Maurices has many well-known brands with lower prices, and with this credit card, the costs become even smaller.
Another happy customer says that this card is fantastic, and you can pay it off right in the store so you can get the benefits without the interest.
The extra coupons have saved them up to 25% off, and with their college student program received this card without a hard credit check. Another loyal Maurices card user who has had this card for over a year has built up to an impressive credit line of $1600 and has never had any problems there.
A more negative review from mybanktracker complains mainly of the card only having benefits and offers for Maurice's customers, which we have already mentioned at the beginning of the article.
The interest rate on the card can get pretty high, and the credit limit can be shallow. But as we have mentioned above, there are ways to avoid a considerable interest charge.
The previous customer also said how they had built their credit limit to a relatively high number, so if you're an avid Maurices shopper, the limit should not be a problem for you.
Other cards to consider
If you don't regularly shop at Maurices, then you should consider looking at other cashback cards with rewards.
The America Express Blue Cash Preferred Card will suit those who grocery shop regularly.
Their offer includes a 6% cashback on all supermarket purchases with up to a $6,000 annual limit.
After that you will start to receive 1% back but this time with no restrictions. Unlimited 6% cashback is available to you if you spend on streaming sites (Netflix and HBO) and also 3% cashback on transit services.
These rewards can later be redeemed once your reward balance is more than $25.
American Express also offers a fantastic welcome bonus of a $300 statement credit if you spend $1,000 in the first three months of signing up.
There is an introductory period with 0% APR offered that lasts 12 months. The APR later becomes 14.74% to 25.74%, depending on your creditworthiness. The only downside is the annual $95 fee.
Another great credit card is the Citi Double Cash Card, which allows you to earn cashback twice. If your purchases are not focused on one specific area, then this is the perfect card to use to maximize points without the hassle.
You can earn an unlimited 1% cashback when you make the purchases, with an additional 1% once you pay your bill on time.
Citi bank offers an introductory offer of 0% APR on balance transfers for the first 18 months and afterward becomes 15.74% – 25.74% according to your credit. There is no annual fee.
However, there is a transfer fee of either $5 or 3% of the amount being transferred (whichever is higher).
The Capital One Savor Cash Rewards is designed to be the perfect cashback card designed for foodies, as it allows you to earn 4% on dining and entertainment and 2% on grocery store shopping, for when you can't decide if you want to eat out or cook at home.
You also earn 1% on all other purchases. For new customers, you are offered a one-time $300 cash bonus once you spend $3,000 for three months after opening the account.
For the first year, this account is free, which later becomes $95 annually. Also, for the duration of the first year, there is a 0% intro APR, and afterward, it is 16.24% – 25.24% based on your creditworthiness.
We also would recommend the Chase Freedom Unlimited credit card for those who don't know what to choose. Earning cash back with this card is not confusing and very straightforward.
Chase Bank allows you to have an unlimited 1,5% cash back on every purchase, just like that. Additionally, you can earn a $200 bonus once you spend $500 on purchases in the first three months of opening your account. This cashback opportunity is super easy to understand and never expires.
There is no minimum amount required to be able to redeem for cashback. You are even given the opportunity to link your Chase Freedom card directly to your Amazon account and redeem your cashback while checking out.
For a duration of 15 months upon opening the account, a 0% intro APR is offered on purchases and balance transfers. After that, 16.99%–25.74% variable APR is applied, according to your income and credit.
All these great features cost nothing, as there are no annual fees required.
The Mymaurices VIP credit card is highly beneficial for shoppers of Maurices stores.
Usually, store-branded credit cards aren't considered equal to what you could get with a sound cashback card from a bank, but this is surprisingly generous with their perks and discounts that regular Maurices customers will find hard to beat.
You can maximize your rewards if you are present at all the special events and look out for other offers, not to mention the fantastic sign-up bonus for 100 bonus points, and additional sales all year long.
Always double-check the requirements and your eligibility before applying for a credit card.
Make sure also to check out your credit score, which you can receive for free from TransUnion, Experian, and Equifax once a year. According to reviewers, Maurices usually checks from Experian, so watch out for that.
If you're not a Maurices shopper, this is not a card you should regard in your search. If you're looking for rewards that can be redeemed in exchange for travel or cashback, there are plenty of other more appropriate cards out there.
But if you find yourself spending a significant amount of your time and money at Maurices, we recommend you apply for this card right now!
